Behind the bone in your cheeks, eyebrows and jaw, you have air chambers more commonly known as sinuses. These air chambers or sinuses create a fluid that cleans bacteria and other particles out of the air you breathe, this fluid is called mucus. Tiny hairs sweep mucus out of your sinuses so it can drain out through your nose, these tiny hairs are called cilia (“sill-ee-ah”). Sinusitis (“sine-you-site-iss”) is a condition that occurs when the lining of your sinuses becomes irritated or inflamed.
Any condition that causes swelling in your sinuses or prevents the cilia from moving the mucus can cause sinusitis. Sometimes this occurs because of changes in temperature or air pressure. Environmental conditions such as frequent use of decongestant nasal sprays, smoking, swimming or diving can also increase your risk of getting sinusitis. Another occasional cause of sinusitis are growths called polyps (“pawl-ips) that can block the sinus passages. Any blockage of your sinus passages can cause mucus to build up, built-up mucus makes a good place for the growth of bacteria. Bacteria in your sinuses can cause a sinus infection.
Signs of sinusitis can be a cold that starts to get better and then gets worse, pain or pressure in some areas of the face. Pain in your forehead that starts when you lean forward can also be a sign. Other symptoms may include a stuffy nose, fever and an ache in your upper teeth.
Here, you will find many products that may help relieve the pain and discomfort of sinusitis. Cold or Hot Therapy will often help provide relief and can be repeated as needed.
